The history of King's (Queens) Day

On August 31, 1885, the first Prince's Day was celebrated in the Netherlands on the occasion of Princess Wilhelmina's fifth birthday. Princess Day was thus the precursor to Queen's Day. After Queen Juliana's coronation in 1891, the celebration was moved to April 30, her birthday. The celebration was also called Queen's Day for the first time from that date. Queen Beatrix never changed this. When King Willem Alexander ascended the throne, celebration did get moved to his birthday. So now we celebrate King's Day on April 27.
